Bethany Names New VP of Finance and Operations and Chief Financial Officer

Bethany College has selected Vincent Weber as the college’s new Vice President of Finance and Operations and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Weber formerly served as the Chief Financial Officer of the Coast Guard Reserve and the Paymaster of the Coast Guard.

“Bethany College is known for producing successful professionals who love God and love people,” says President Will Jones. “Mr. Weber fits our culture well. We are thankful that he will join with other talented professionals at Bethany to help our more of our students to achieve success and to help make our local community even greater.”

After graduating from the College of William & Mary MBA program in 2000 and with 16 years of Coast Guard experience, Weber was named Chief Financial Officer for the Coast Guard Reserve. During this time, he created extensive budget models and worked with senior leadership to document the costs associated with legislative proposals and to aggressively manage each year’s funds.

Weber was then promoted to Pay Master of the Coast Guard as Commanding Officer, Personnel Support Command (PSC) in Topeka, KS. He led a 300-person unit in completing an annual payroll of $4.5 billion and annual travel claims of $100 million for all the Coast Guard (100,000 customers).  He also implemented new emergency response procedures and conducted emergency response exercises, thus ensuring the safety and security of the payroll system.

Based upon his reputation as a successful financial and project manager, the Coast Guard sent Weber to New Orleans to rebuild the Gulf Coast facilities, improve personnel policies and assist in the revamping of emergency procedures to respond to future hurricanes. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans region, Coast Guard units in the area needed to be rebuilt and upgraded. Weber, as Resource Director, Eighth Coast Guard District, documented and oversaw the $300 million renovation of Coast Guard units damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. While updating emergency response procedures from the lessons learned during Hurricane Katrina, Weber coordinated the evacuation of Coast Guard personnel around New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX in response to Hurricanes Ike and Gustov.

From there, Weber was Coast Guard Liaison to the Department of Defense (DOD), U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM), Scott AFB in Illinois. He was responsible for coordinating logistical support for six Coast Guard Patrol boats in Bahrain and Coast Guard personnel in the Middle East. He also attained a priority shipment of critical pollution response equipment from Valdez, AK to New Orleans, LA for the prompt response to the oil platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico (Deepwater Horizon). While Weber conducted detailed logistical and cost/benefit analysis to determine options associated with returning the six Coast Guard patrol boats from Bahrain back to the East Coast of the United States, he maintained a Top Secret Security Clearance.

“Mr. Weber is a seasoned executive with a strong background in financial management,” says Ryan Swartz ’00, Bethany College Board Member and the Business and Finance Committee Chair. “He understands the challenges and is particularly well-equipped to work with Bethany’s senior team to continue, and improve, the systematic oversight in place. Having led a number of organizations with service as CFO, Vince has developed a reputation as a strong organizational leader and an excellent collaborator with teams.”

Prior to his MBA, Weber was Reserve Management in Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC; Deck Watch Officer and Boarding Officer aboard Coast Guard Cutters Decisive and Durable out of Tampa, FL; the Senior Command Center Controller of the Ninth District Office in Cleveland, OH; Operations Officer of Coast Guard Cutter Mellon out of Seattle, WA; and the Reserve Personnel Management and Personnel Contingency Response Coordinator for the East Coast and the Gulf Coasts.

Currently, Vincent is a member of Salina’s Board of Zoning Appeals. Other volunteer activities include being Vice President of Sunrise Optimists Club and a volunteer at Junior Achievement teaching financial literacy to middle school students. He is a recent graduate of 13-week Shawnee County Sherriff’s Citizens Academy. His hobbies include woodworking, golf, personal financial management, and reading military history.

While in the Coast Guard, Vincent was proud to support the many important missions of the Coast Guard. As a graduate of a small liberal arts college, an adjunct professor, and a person who enjoys mentoring others, he is excited to support and actively engage in the development of the next generation of professionals attending Bethany College. “My wife, Kelley, and I met at a small liberal arts college, so we know how the experiences at an intimate college like Bethany can be life changing,” says Weber. “The small classes, personal attention and great programs provide a truly unique experience.  We look forward to becoming part of the special place of Lindsborg and Bethany. We are excited about becoming a part of a close-knit community. Go Swedes!”
