A Salina woman was scammed out of $1,300 while trying to rent a home she found using social media.
According to Salina Police, a 20-year-old female who was looking for a rental found one of interest on Facebook. She called a contact number, which was not a local area code, listed on a post which had a photo of a home in the 1300 block of E Minneapolis listed for rent.
The person claiming to own the home instructed her to send $1,300 via Western Union for an application fee, and deposit. After sending the money, the woman drove by the house and discovered it was not for rent, and the person who listed it on Facebook was not the owner.
Police say it’s never a good idea to send any money for a transaction like this without first touring the property.
