Man Killed In Crash With Combine

A Downs man was killed a crash involving a combine Tuesday evening near Beloit.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 84-year-old Meryl G. Garey from Downs was driving a 1997 Chevy S10 pickup headed east on U.S. 24 Highway. He was attempting to pass a Case-International Combine and a 2009 Ford pickup.

During the pass Garey’s truck struck the left rear wheel of the combine. The truck overturned on the driver’s side, and slid into the north guardrail.

Garey was transported to Mitchell County Hospital where he died. Troopers say that he was not buckled up.

The crash happened just before 6:00 Tuesday evening on U.S. 24 Highway in Mitchell County 5 miles west of Beloit.
