Police say that a Salina teen was shot to death Wednesday evening in a case of mistaken identity.

Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson spoke with the media Thursday morning, and released details on the the shooting death of a 17-year-old Salina girl.

Nelson said the shooting, which happened at around 9:30 Wednesday evening on Russell Street near the intersection with Norton, was prompted by an earlier fight and mistaken identity.

Nelson said that following the fight earlier in the evening, a group of people went out to seek revenge. One of them mistakenly identified a male in a blue, Dodge pickup as being involved in the fight. He was not.

Police say shots were fired at the truck as it drove eastbound in the 500 block of Russell. One of those shots hit a 17-year-girl in the head. She has been identified as Allie Saum, a student at Salina South High School. She was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where she died.

The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as 18-year-old Vince Johnson of Salina, who was not injured.

Police vigorously worked the case throughout the night, and arrested 6 people who they say were involved in the shooting.

Those arrested include:

  • 22-year-old Macio Palacio. Felony Murder. Unlawful Discharge of a Weapon.
  • 19-year-old Jerome Forbes. Conspiracy to Commit Felony Murder. Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Discharge of a Firearm. Obstruction.
  • 18-year-old Stephen Gentry. Conspiracy to Commit Felony Murder. Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Discharge of a Firearm. Obstruction.
  • 17-year-old Andrew Woodring. Conspiracy to Commit Felony Murder. Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Discharge of a Firearm.
  • 19-year-old Daniel Sims. Conspiracy to Commit Felony Murder. Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Discharge of a Firearm. Obstruction.
  • 21-year-old Azucena Garcia-Ferniza. Felony Obstruction. Child Endangerment.

According to Chief Nelson, Palacio fired several shots from a Glock .45 caliber handgun, striking the tailgate of the truck, and a nearby vehicle parked on the street. “One round traveled through the rear window striking Saum in the head,” Chief Nelson said.

Chief Nelson offered his condolences to the Saum family for their “tragic loss”.

My prayers go out to this family. Such an terrible loss for NO REASON!!! What is wrong with people, when they think that the best way to settle a fight or disagreement is to pull out a gun and start shooting. Why what does it solve???? Nothing!!!! It is so sad that that’s how things are being handled, and a beautiful young lady paid the price. So sad. My sincere condolences to the family, friends, and to all that knew her.
