UPDATE: Woman Jumps Off Overpass

KSAL Staff - September 9, 2013 2:27 pm

A Salina woman jumps off an overpass onto Interstate 70 in an apparent suicide attempt early Monday afternoon.

According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, 43-year-old Amy Caldwell of Salina parked her car near the overpass. She got out, walked onto the deck, and jumped over the rail. She landed about 30 feet below.

A passing truck driver saw her jump, and was able to avoid hitting her on the road.

Caldwell survived the fall, but with critical injuries. She was conscious and speaking with medical personnel at the scene.

Traffic was stopped in both directions to allow a helicopter to land and transport the victim to a Wichita hospital. She had multiple injuries including multiple fractures and a possible head injury.

The overpass is located just east of the Solomon Rest Area on Amos Road, near the Saline / Dickinson County line.

not to mention she could have gone through a windshield and taken a life or two with her and not have cared at all

You people have absolutely no heart. This woman obviously has severe mental issues that need to be addressed. Maybe she didn’t have insurance…so what? She needs all the help & support she can get. I have a daughter that suffers from depression (yes, she has insurance!) and it is an everyday struggle for her. It’s too bad this woman’s family & friends did not recognize the seriousness of her situation before she decided to make the decision to end her life. Unfortunately, people only seem to care when it’s too late. I don’t know this woman or her family, but I hopefully will not be the only one praying for her & her family during this difficult time. There will always be people who only care whether or not she has insurance, but I pray there are more people who care more about her getting the help she desperately needs…

Melissa….I think there are regulars on here that have mental issues too. You might not HAVE to be a mental case to qualify…but i’m sure it helps. (No need for names….y’all know who they are.)

Well it looks like she got the attention she wanted. Even if she has the insurance, I’m sure the deductible won’t be paid due to her being off of work for a while. But you tax payers in Kansas will pick up the tab. 🙂 I recall the Schawn’s guy that was killed because of someone jumping off the overpass. If someone really wants to take there own life, for what ever reason, mental issues or not, they should not risk taking someone else’s life when attempting to do so.

I have never been able to understand being so depressed you would attempt/take your own life. That does not mean I do not feel badly for those that reach that point in their lives and generally they show no signs of doing this, so it is hard for others to see it coming. My thoughts to all involved in this unfortunate circumstance. However, that being said, If you feel you have reached a point where ending your own life is the only option you can find, then you will do it one way or another, BUT I cannot, will not, do not, condone nor understand why taking/ attempting to take another person/s life along with yours or commit suicide in a way that makes the one finding you have that vision with them forever goes beyond reason. Depression is a deadly illness and many struggle with it.

Gret Jason then why did you not see this coming? Close friends confide in each other about things going on in their lives. Looks like you dropped the ball here buddy. I agree if she wants to kill herself then do it without endangering innocent people. Sounds like she needs a one way trip to Larnard State Hospital.

I hope you all know that you are all heartless. You have no right to say these things about her. THIS WOMAN IS MY AUNT. She is my family and I hope you all know how glad I am that she failed. How dare you say “better luck next time”. How dare you! If she succeeded then I would be heartbroken. I hope all of you feel like horrible people for saying that. She tried to kill her self…. does that not mean anything? I’m only 15, I can’t deal with my aunt attempting suicide. Why say this stuff on here when there is a possibility that her family will read this, like me.
