Woman Dies Trying To Save Dog

Police in Kansas say a woman has died after falling through ice on a pond while trying to retrieve her dog.

Sergeant John Ryan with the Wichita Police Department said Sunday afternoon that divers recovered the woman’s body from the pond in park on the city’s northeast side.

Ryan told the Wichita Eagle that the woman had not yet been identified but appeared to be between 25 and 30.

Ryan says the woman was walking her dog when it spotted another dog and ran across the pond. The woman went out onto the ice as the dogs were scuffling.

The newspaper and KWCH-TV report at least one witness attempted to rescue the woman.

The dog did not survive.
