Some parts of Kansas received up to half a foot of snow in the season’s first snowstorm, but the white stuff isn’t sticking around very long.

The Wichita Eagle reports 6 inches of snow fell in the northwest part of the state, while the Goodland area got 5 inches and eastern Hodgeman and western Pawnee counties received about 3 inches.

National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Russell says roads got slushy in areas with the biggest accumulations, but the snow melted quickly because the ground is still warm.

Wichita had a trace of snow, but it wasn’t enough to qualify as the earliest measurable snow in the city’s history. That record, set Oct. 22, 1996, is safe as warmer temperatures are expected to last through the end of next week.
