Scoreless Second Quarter Dooms Cowgirls in Loss to McPherson

Despite not having a single starter back from last season the Abilene Cowgirls got off to a 3-0 start with wins over Smokey Valley, Rock Creek and Augusta.  Abilene faced their biggest challenge of the young season though tonight in the McPherson Lady Bullpups.  The Cowgirls got off to a great start as they led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter but a scoreless second quarter ultimately doomed them in a 53-36 loss.

Abilene hit four threes in the first quarter which included two each by Junior Sydney Burton and Junior Hannah Willey.  Those same shots wouldn’t fall in the second quarter and the Cowgirls would trail 25-16 at halftime.  McPherson led by 11 after three quarters and would lead by as much as 19 in the fourth quarter.

Abilene was led by Sydney Burton, who finished with 13 points.  Hannah Willey also reached double figures with 10.  McPherson Senior Taylor Robertson finished with 23 points on the night.  Robertson has committed to play at Oklahoma next season.

The Abilene Cowboys fell behind big early and never recovered in their 73-21 loss to the Bullpups.  Abilene trailed 24-6 at the end of the first quarter and the deficit was 52-15 at halftime.  The margin grew to 70-25 at the end of the third, which led to a running clock in the fourth.

McPherson was led by Senior Mason Alexander, who finished with a game high 23 points.  Abilene was led on the night by Senior Noah Wildman, who finished with 9 points.

Abilene travels to Concordia Friday for a match up with the Panthers.
