The Salina Arts & Humanities Foundation awards four Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants. The grants are for projects occurring in the calendar year beginning January 1, 2014.

The projects supported by these grants range in artistic media from
filmmaking to ceramics. The dollars awarded will enable grantees to enter into a course of study, promote their work, and implement outreach in the Salina community.

Lana Jordan Developing Artist Awards for 2014 are given to:

Glory Benacka in the amount of $3,000 to create a 30-minute
documentary entitled “Backyard Almanac,” an environmental
documentary about Salina’s backyard culture, gardeners and the ecology of these manmade ecosystems. “Backyard Almanac” will be screened for the Salina community and submitted to film festivals.

Phyllis Klima, a functional ceramic artist, will receive $2,808 to return to full-time ceramic studio work. She will attend a three-week Studio Immersive at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, CO, concentrating on mid-range clay and glaze formulations and firing techniques. Klima will then teach an intermediate wheel throwing workshop through Salina Public Library’s 2014 Fall CLASS program.

Ann Marie Morris will receive $1,249 to attend the National Art
Education Association’s national convention in San Diego, CA, where
she will explore innovative ways to incorporate and utilize technology in learning opportunities for the Salina Art Center. Upon her return, she will develop curriculum for Art Center programs to engage audiences with new media art tools and will share techniques learned at the convention with other Salina cultural educators.

Ann Zimmerman will use her grant award of $2,433 to introduce a new
children’s CD, “MEADOWLARK: Songs for the Child in You.” She will
transcribe songs to sheet music for physical and digital publication for purchase, and will produce a music video of one of the songs involving Sunset Elementary School third graders, culminating in a concert. She will also use the grant funding to make improvements to her website.

Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants are awarded based on the applicant’s commitment to a career as a practicing artist and in advancing the artist’s growth and art form. Proposals are rated for artistic excellence, strength of the components that will be implemented as outreach to the Salina community, and for financial
viability.
