Officer Hurt Making Arrest

A Salina Police officer’s thumb is broken while capturing a man running away from law enforcement.

Officers were called to the 300 block of S. 11th on Thursday just before midnight after a concerned citizen called about suspicious behavior of a man in the area.

Officers made contact with 25-year-old Ryan Kent of Salina on the street and asked him to stop.

Police tell KSAL News that Kent then ran northbound into the dark and struck an officer who was interviewing a witness nearby.

During the scuffle, Officer Andrew Meek’s left thumb was broken while another officer’s right knee was scraped.

Captain Mike Sweeney says an antenna on the police cruiser was broken by Kent as he was being placed in the car.

Police report that Kent was wanted on a probation violation and will now face additional charges of resisting arrest, damage to property and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer.
