PHOTO GALLERY: Pets Perish In Duplex Fire

Salina firefighters late Monday morningĀ  battled the cold, and a large structure fire.

Salina Fire Marshal Roger Williams told KSAL News at the scene that crews were called at around 10:30 to the report of a duplex on fire at 805 W. Ash Street.

Williams says that one half of the duplex was fully involved, with heavy smoke and fire, when the the first crews arrived.

Williams says the resident was not home at the time of the fire, but his two pet dogs were. Firefighters made entry and brought both out, but it was too late to save either one. Both died in the fire.

The other half of the duplex is currently unoccupied.

Williams adds that the bitter cold temperatures made the fire a little more challenging to fight.
