A man escapes a fiery wreck with help from a neighbor.

Sheriff  Glen Kochanowski tells KSAL News that Hershel Sanders stepped outside to walk his dog Wednesday night around 8:40pm – and immediately noticed a truck in his yard that was on fire.

Deputies say just moments before, 55-year-old Ricky Leister’s pickup had smashed into a hedgerow of trees in the 4400 block of E. North Street and came to rest in Sanders’ yard.

Sanders helped Leister out of the shattered back window of the 2002 Chevy Silverado before the entire cab was engulfed in flames.

Deputies say Leister, who lives in the 6200 block of E. North Street, refused transport to the hospital by EMS but was treated later at Salina Regional Health Center for a deep cut on his left elbow and cut on his nose.

I have friends that live in that area and they constantly complain about how fast people drive down that road this guy being one of them. Since all the sheriff’s department does is look for speeders just maybe they should set up on this road and make some money.

I went out there today and could not find any hedge row remotely close to the property he ended up in. Even the bush’s in front of the house had no damage. What were those deputies looking at? Evidently this guy was on drugs, drunk ect and did not wish to go to the hospital from the accident scene. Hey sheriff why did your deputies not test this guy this was not a small fender bender. Looks like he had an in with the sheriff’s office.
