UPDATE: Gas Line Leak West of Salina

Officials are on the scene of a gas line leak west of Salina, and a portion of Interstate 70 is back open.

A spokesperson from Northern Natural Gas Company in Omaha tells KSAL News that one of their underground natural gas lines ruptured early Thursday afternoon. There was no explosion when the line ruptured.

The leak is located about 24 miles west of Salina,  north of I 70, in the area of milepost 230. The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed between the area of mileposts 238 and 225. At about 3:15 they opened back up.

The company says that there are not any injuries.

Company personnel are on the scene, and “out of an abundance of caution” the interstate was shut down.

The company stresses that the public is not in any danger.

ORIGINAL: Officials are on the scene of a gas line explosion west of Salina, and a portion of Interstate 70 is closed.

The incident happened early Thursday afternoon, and involves a natural gas line.  It is located about 24 miles west of Salina, north of I 70, in the area of milepost 230. The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are closed between the area of mileposts 238 and 225.

A witness at the scene tells KSAL News that there is a shooting plume of gas in the air, and the hissing sound of the gas can be heard from a quarter mile away.

Officials tell KSAL News that there are not any injuries.
