A Salina woman jumps off an overpass onto Interstate 70 in an apparent suicide attempt early Monday afternoon.

According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, 43-year-old Amy Caldwell of Salina parked her car near the overpass. She got out, walked onto the deck, and jumped over the rail. She landed about 30 feet below.

A passing truck driver saw her jump, and was able to avoid hitting her on the road.

Caldwell survived the fall, but with critical injuries. She was conscious and speaking with medical personnel at the scene.

Traffic was stopped in both directions to allow a helicopter to land and transport the victim to a Wichita hospital. She had multiple injuries including multiple fractures and a possible head injury.

The overpass is located just east of the Solomon Rest Area on Amos Road, near the Saline / Dickinson County line.
