Cynthia Lou Curran

Cynthia (Cindy) Lou Curran died Saturday, December 9, 2017 at her home. Cindy was born Cindy Nienaber May 19, 1960 in Newman Grove, Nebraska. She graduated from Geneva, NE high school in 1978 and then attended Marymount College where she met her future husband, Larry Curran. They were married in 1982 and have lived in Salina ever since. To this union, two children were born.

Cindy taught for 27 years at St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School. She was known as a very creative teacher and was well loved and respected by the students and fellow teachers alike. She taught many different levels, her favorite became the implementation and strengthening of the science curriculum at St. Mary’s. Cindy was a “hands on” teacher and introduced the Young Einstein’s program to the school. That program allowed her fifth and sixth grade students to learn about many science topics and then they mentored to younger students at the school. She was known for making her classroom so much fun that the students didn’t even realize they were learning at the same time. Earlier this year, Cindy was awarded the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious schools Distinguished Teacher Award and was inducted into the KAIRS Hall of Fame.

Her colleagues were her friends and joined in bringing education to life. Many times historical figures such as Ben Franklin or Thomas Edison would show up in full costume. She also had many original characters that entertained students and teachers alike. Her sense of humor was infectious and made her a joy to those who knew her and she enriched each of their lives.

As accomplished as she was in her chosen profession, Cindy’s greatest pride in her life were her children and grandchildren. Cindy was a devoted mother to Alysun and Jason and loved the special moments they had as they grew up. She traveled often with her children and especially with her sister Rene. She enjoyed building furniture, crafting, and her daily walks with her friend, Sherrie Kelly.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Nienaber. She leaves behind her husband, Larry, daughter and son in law Alysun and Chris Lauck, son, Jason Curran, grandsons, Landon and Hunter, mother, Maryann Nienaber, siblings, Rene, Carl and Marie as well as many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a legacy of love and a scholarship created in her name, the Mrs. Curran Enthusiasm for Science Award (MCESA).

Visitation will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church from 4-7 on Friday, December 15 with the family present from 6-7 p.m and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 16th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Salina at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials and contributions may be made to MCESA scholarship fund (c/o St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School) or to Catholic Charities.
