Man Killed In Airplane Crash

A Cimmaron man is killed in a plane crash near Wilson Lake on Sunday.

According to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday afternoon at 12:20 a report of a plane crash came into the Russell County 911 Dispatch. Deputies from the Russell County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with officers from the Kansas Wildlife and Parks, US Army Corps of Engineers and Troopers from Kansas Highway Patrol. Russell EMS, Russell Rescue Squad and Lucas Fire also responded.

First responders discovered a single engine plane crashed on Mellard Road between 199th St. and 200th St. near Lake Wilson. The pilot of the aircraft was deceased at the scene. He was later identified as 66-year-old Rufus (Rusty) M. Woods III from Cimarron, Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and the FAA are investigating the accident.
