A Salina man might be the first victim of identity theft stemming from personal information that was stolen from a drive up bank cash machine.

Police say that a 70-year-old man’s Sunflower Bank card account information was used to make withdrawals on Monday in Lewisville, Texas and in Pearl, Mississippi. A total of $609.94 was withdrawn from the man’s account.

Police Captain Mike Sweeney says they are investigating the possibility that the man’s account information was stolen last week when a device known as “skimmer” was found at drive up ATMs at two Salina Sunflower Bank locations.

A skimmer is a device used to steal personal information. A thief attaches it to an ATM. The bank customer’s card slides through the skimmer first – then into the machine. A chip inside the skimmer device records information about the account without the knowledge of the customer.

On Thursday of last week, skimmers were found at drive up ATMs at two Sunflower Bank locations in Salina; 2450 S. 9th and 2070 S. Ohio.

Investigators believe that the case is connected to one in Wichita, where similar theft devices have been found.

Police in Salina on Monday released a video, and  two images captured on a bank security camera of a person placing the skimmer on the ATM at the bank location on South Ohio Street.
