Suspect Killed; Deputy Hurt

A Cowley County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and wounded a suspect in a traffic stop Saturday evening south of Dexter. That person later died as a result of their injuries, according to Sheriff Don Read.

The officer was also injured and hospitalized. He has since been treated and released.

Around 7:10 p.m. Saturday, authorities were called to the report of shots fired following a traffic stop near the intersection of K-15 and U.S. 166 highways. Read did not say what transpired that led to the firing of a weapon.

The suspect, who was the driver of the vehicle that had been stopped, was transported from the scene to South Central Kansas Medical Center and died there.

Because the incident involved a Cowley County Deputy, the investigation is being conducted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

A portion of 166, just west of the K-15/166 intersection, remained shut down into the early-morning hours Sunday.
