Salina Officers Honored For Valor

Three Salina Police Officers have been honored for heroism.

According to the department, Sergeant Gary Hanus, Master Patrol Officer Mike Miller and Master Patrol Officer Scott Hogeland were all recipients of the Gold Award for uncommon valor at the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police awards program on Wednesday in Manhattan.

The Salina officers were honored for their heroic actions on May 21, 2014 when they responded to a domestic violence call of a man armed with a rifle. As the man approached the officers and victim, he fired several shots. The officers took calm and decisive actions under gunfire to quickly neutralize an almost certain tragic event.

There were 121 received nominations from across Kansas but only 49 individual awards were granted.

Each year the KACP recognizes and honors officers who have put their lives on the line to protect Kansas citizens or fellow officers and to apprehend dangerous criminals. The KACP holds an annual “KACP Awards Banquet” where they are recognized and presented plaques, in front of leaders of the law enforcement community, family, friends, and the news media.
