A long-delayed effort to build a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower is gaining design approvals to potentially move forward.

A powerful arts panel that must approve designs for memorials in the nation’s capital is again objecting to plans for a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Architect Frank Gehry designed a memorial park framed by large metal tapestries depicting the Kansas landscape of Eisenhower’s boyhood home. Statues of Ike as president and World War II hero would stand at the center.

Several members of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts said Thursday that they object to the towering columns and side tapestries in the design. They raised similar concerns about the large scale in July but voted to approve the general concept.

No further action was taken this week. The commission will provide written comments to the group working to build the memorial and will meet again next year.
