A Russell man is in custody after a standoff at a home that lasted nearly 8½ hours.

Russell County Sheriff John Fletcher says the standoff began Sunday evening when the man barricaded himself in a home, and threatened either to shoot officers or commit suicide. The standoff ended early Monday.

Fletcher says in a statement that officers found Becker hiding under basement stairs and he was arrested after a brief struggle.

The man was wanted on several felony charges.
