Federal Charges in Smolan Case

Two people are facing federal charges in connection with alleged drug and weapons crimes in Smolan.

According to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall’s office, Jason P. Briscoe, 39, and Jamie L. Husley, 38, are charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm following a felony conviction, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm with serial number removed.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred November 18th in Smolan. The I-135 / I-70 Drug Task Force assisted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the drug bust. The Kansas Highway Patrol surrounded a house located at 215 S. Main in Smolan. They made several drug and weapons related arrests.

If convicted, the due could face penalties that include:

  • Count one: Up to life in prison and a fine up to $250,000
  • Count two: Up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000
  • Count three: Up to 20 years and a fine up to $250,000
  • Count four: Up to five years and a fine up to $250,000
