Dog May Have Chased Burglar Before Being Shot

High-end welding tools are stolen from a home east of Brookville.

Saline County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a residential burglary that occurred sometime between July 28th and August 19th at a rural property in the 10,000 block of West Waterwell Road.

Owner Derek Devine told officers he returned home after being gone for several weeks and noticed some hand tools were missing.

He then found pry marks on a door on his enclosed back porch and discovered that multiple tools were missing including two wire welders valued at a combined $2,700.

Deputies say two Yamaha ATV tires were also taken along with a welding oxygen bottle, plasma cutter, push mower, power washer and a C25 gas bottle for welding. Total loss is listed at $6,500.

Captain Roger Soldan with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office tells KSAL News that Devine’s dog was also shot and killed in early August.

Devine’s wife was home on August 2nd and recalled the dog barking around 5am that morning. When she saw the malamute mix around noon he was limping. Soldan says the dog died on the way to the veterinarian’s office from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

“We’re not sure if the dog’s death is connected to the burglary or not,” Captain Soldan said.

The case remains under investigation.
