Artillery Shell at Salina Home
KSAL Staff - April 19, 2016 10:20 am
An explosive ordinance disposal unit from Fort Riley responded to Salina Monday to help dispose of an artillery shell.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that the shell belonged to a recently deceased Salina man, whose wife called a friend to dispose of it. The friend took the shell to a home at 1213 Talley, and then decided to contact police. Police received the call at 3:21 in the afternoon.
Sweeney says that both the Kansas Highway Patrol and the unit from Fort Riley responded, and six surrounding houses were evacuated as a precaution.
The shell, determined to be a 105 mm artillery shell, was deemed to be inert, but the trigger mechanism was still functioning. It was transported to the Smoky Hill Weapons Range for disposal.
There were no injuries.
