The final numbers are in, and the ordinance which bans pit bull dogs in Salina will not be repealed. The dog breed will remain illegal in the City of Salina.
The votes were tabulated from the special election Tuesday afternoon. The unofficials vote count is as follows:
- Yes (to repeal the ban) – 4,123 – 43.6 %
- No (to not repeal and keep the ban) – 5,329 – 56.4%
Total votes tabulated were 9,452, which is 29.7 %.
Saline Clerk Jamie Doss tells KSAL News there are still about 270 provisional ballots to be counted, which would not be enough to change the results.
The vote count will become official when county commissioners canvass on Monday.
The pit bull ban in Salina was enacted by the Salina City Commission in 2004.
In December of 2019 the issue was revisited again. At that time Salina City Commissioners voted 3 – 2 to not overturn the breed specific ordinance which makes the dog illegal to have within city limits.
On October 27, 2025, a petition to repeal the pit bull dog ban in Salina was presented to the Salina City Manager’s Office. After it was validated the special election was triggered.
The issue now cannot be revisited until 2036.
