Steve (Burger) Schmidt

Steve (Burger) Schmidt, 77, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at his home in Salina, KS surrounded by family and friends.  A Celebration of Life service will take place with Ryan Mortuary on Friday October 7th at 2pm.  Refreshments and time to visit with family  will start at about 1pm.  Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to Interim Health and Hospice Care of Salina.

Steve was born November 12, 1944.  The oldest son of AR and Viona Schmidt and grew up on the Schmidt family farm outside of Woodbine, KS with his younger brother, Tracy.  He graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in 1963 then joined the U.S. Navy.  While stationed in San Diego, CA, he met the younger sister of his Navy buddy (I didn’t think you were supposed to date your friend’s sisters but…) and eventually brought her back to Kansas.  In July of 1968 he married Janeece M. Patch of Colman SD and moved to Salina, KS where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 2007.

He is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Janeece, 2 children Monica Craig (m. Charles Craig), and Gordon Schmidt (m Dr. Cari Ahlers Schmidt), 2 Grandchildren Sam and Wyatt Schmidt, and his brother, Tracy Schmidt (m. Katherine Schmidt).

Steve served proudly as a rifleman with the Salina VFW Honor Guard and was a stranger to none.  He had a boisterous personality and will be remembered by all who knew him as a man with a generous heart and a willing hand, always ready to stand a round at the bar.

Celebration of Life will be 2 pm Friday, October 7, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary.  Visitation will begin at 12:30 pm.  Military Honors will be provided by the VFW Post #1432.

Memorials may be made to Interim Home Health and Hospice, in care of Ryan Mortuary.
