Shirley Jean Unruh

Shirley Jean Unruh, 89, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 4:15 p.m., Friday, February 23rd, 2018 while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.

Shirley was born in McPherson, Kansas on April 10, 1928 a daughter of Bessie Arlene (Anderson) and Thomas Samuel Miller.

Shirley attended Roxbury grade school and attended two years at Roxbury High School, Roxbury, Kansas.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church McPherson, Kansas where she was a member of the morning circle, Kum Joy Nus coffee club, worked for many years making funeral dinners, worked in the office as a secretary and served her church in many other capacities.

Shirley was a home maker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. She worked as a seamstress, baby sitter and later worked for the Premer family for 30 years and retired in 1990 as manager of The Best Western Holiday Manor Motel, McPherson, Kansas.

Shirley was a member of the Genealogical Society, the Gem and Mineral Club, the Historical Society, the Mud Creek Chapter of KAA, all of McPherson, Kansas, and was a member of the Kansas Hotel/Motel Association. Shirley enjoyed genealogy, traveling and bird watching.

Shirley Jean Miller was united in marriage to Louis Henry Unruh on August 5, 1943 at Newton, Kansas. Louis died on August 31, 1997.

She is survived by her children, Douglas Unruh and wife Kathie, of McPherson, Kansas and Cynthia Jones and husband Richard, of Tempe, Arizona; her siblings, Rachel Johnson, of McPherson, Kansas, Opal Specker, of Monte Vista, Colorado, R. K., Miller and wife Shirley, of Surprise, Arizona, and Kenneth Miller and wife Beth, of Salina, Kansas; her foster daughters, Liz Cunningham, of McPherson, Kansas and Patty Johnson and husband Rick, of McPherson, Kansas; her grandson, Phil Unruh and wife Carla, of McPherson, Kansas; special friends, Don Huber, of McPherson, Kansas and Pam Unruh, of McPherson, Kansas; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie and Thomas Miller; her husband, Louis Unruh; and her brother, Robert (Little Tom) Miller.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, Kansas.

The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 with the Reverend H. Dick Reynolds, Jr. officiating.

The burial will be in the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas.
