Mildred “Millie” Fink

Mildred “Millie” Maxine Fink, 98, passed away on December 23, 2023 at the Holiday Resort Health & Rehab of Salina.

Mildred was born on October 15, 1925 in Arnold, KS to parents Henry William and Catherine Esther Sargent Ummel.

Millie was a farm girl raised in Arnold, KS with eight siblings. She played the piano, organ and violin. She loved playing duets with her sister Evelyn, they played for many social and family events.

In school, she played basketball and earned a letter her senior year. She was voted class vice-president by her six classmates.

After graduating high school Millie attended Fort Hays College to earn a teaching certificate and taught in the Hays, KS area.

During World War II she worked at Walker Army Air Force Base at Victoria, KS. She worked in the administration building as a clerical worker. Part of her responsibilities was to write a description for the repair parts for aircraft damage in action.

After the war Millie moved to Salina and attended Brown Mackie Business School. The school was so impressed with her that they hired her as a typist so she never graduated.

It was during this time that she met a blonde, handsome, dashing, former sailor on a blind date. While he was instantly smitten, it took her several months to pay any attention to him. They ended up being married for 61 years.

Later on her jobs included Paris Corporation and then retiring from a position with the State of Kansas Highway Department. She enjoyed camping, fishing, sewing, and knitting.

She was preceded in death by her Husband Marvin Fink, Parents: Catherine and Henry Ummel; Son: Robert Fink.

Millie is survived by; Children: Donald Fink of Salina, KS, Kathy Fink of Centennial, CO; Grandsons: Nathan Fink of Olathe, KS, Jason Fink and spouse Sabrina of Salina, KS; Great-Granddaughter: Morgan Fink of Salina, KS; Great-Grandsons: Logan Fink of Salina, KS and Jacob Fink of Olathe, KS; Sister: Eunice Ummel of Salina, KS; Brothers: Don Ummel of Des Moines, IA, Marvin Ummel of The Villages, FL.

Graveside services will take place at 10:00 AM, Friday, December 29, 2023 in the Roselawn Memorial Park in Salina, KS with the funeral services to follow at 11:00 AM in the First Covenant Church in Salina, KS. Memorials have been established with the Interim Hospice or to the Donor’s Choice in care of the funeral home.
