Lillian Sanchez

Lillian Sanchez, 99, of Salina, entered into eternal life on Thursday, June 5, 2025. She was born in Bushton, KS on July 7, 1925, the daughter of Calista Robledo and Jesus Vargas.  Lillian worked as a Unit Secretary at St. John’s and Asbury Hospital for many years before retiring to care for her husband, Philip, until his death in 1982.

Lillian was an intuitive cook, knowing how to make things by feel or appearance.  She cooked many meals for her children over the years and family favorites were her enchiladas, tamales and lemon meringue pie.  Many people were fed from her table including friends, family, priests, monsignors and the occasional stranger in need. She began making ceramics and painting in her 70s and discovered her talent for art.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, her sons, Albert Lee, Jonathon Howard and Philip Timothy, her grandson, Andrew, and all her siblings. Survivors include her daughters, Gwendolyn Reese of Salina, Ann Spence of Kokoma, IN, Faith Vargas of Wichita, Margaret (Justin) Buchanan of Georgetown, TX, and Rachel (John) Becker of Bartlesville, OK.; twelve grandchildren, Albert, Teresa, Larry, Jerry, Tim, John, Amanda, Lou, Victoria, LeAnna, Gage and Sloan; fourteen great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025 with the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina.  Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 17th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

Lillian loved bright colors and her favorite color was red, so those attending her services are encouraged to wear red or bright colors in her honor.  Memorials can be sent in her memory to Fresenius Kidney Care Salina, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or donors choice of charity.
