Leon Eugene McGaha

Leon Eugene McGaha, 85, of Valley Center, Kansas, passed away, Saturday, May 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, song, and a camera full of memories.

Born December 8, 1940, in Albion, Illinois, Leon grew up in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, and Newton, Kansas, before settling into a life defined by hard work and helping others.

Leon was a fixture of the Teamsters Local 696, serving as Union Steward for over 20 years and remaining active with the retired Teamsters long after his 35-year career driving for Exide Batteries. Even in “retirement,” Leon’s work ethic kept him busy for another decade. But it was his heart for people that truly set him apart. Whether he was hauling relief supplies to Katrina victims and Texas farmers, organizing Toys for Tots, or ensuring local families had Christmas dinner, Leon was always the first to volunteer. He was the kind of man who would stop his car to help a stranger push theirs or quietly cover the difference for someone short on change at the grocery store.

When he wasn’t volunteering, Leon could be found at the Salina Speedway every Friday night he could manage. At family gatherings, he was always the one behind the lens, capturing every moment for those he loved. He will be forever remembered for his habit of breaking into random song lyrics and his signature response to any “I love you”—a quick and heartfelt, “I love you more.”

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Jerome and Rose Grace McGaha; his wife, Lois McGaha; his son, Michael McGaha; and seven siblings: Leonard Jerome Jr., Delores, Janice, Anita, Miles, Glen, and Bette. He is survived by his children, Matilda, Brittani, and Taren; his sister, Rita; his grandsons, Timothy and Tyler; and his great-grandchildren, Rae-lynn, Leon, Logan, and Owen.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 East Crawford Street, Salina.  Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Heier Scott Mortuary and Cremations, 1920 East Crawford Street, Salina, Kansas 67401.
