Larry Dean Houdek

Larry Dean Houdek, 88, of Salina, Kansas, peacefully passed away on December 6, 2023. He was born on September 2, 1935, in Concordia, Kansas, to the late Bedford and Agnes (Anderson) Houdek.

Larry was a proud graduate of Agenda High School and went on to earn his business degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1957. During his time at Wesleyan, Larry excelled, earning both academic and athletic accolades. Known for his exceptional speed and agility on the football field, he was affectionately referred to as the “Agenda Antelope.” Larry lettered all four years in Football, Basketball and Track; he was named Little All American by The Associated Press and listed in the Who’s Who of Sports Illustrated.

After college, with nothing but sports on his mind Larry set out on his professional path that spanned over 55 years. He went from being a salesman for Knights Sporting Goods, to owning the Sports Connection stores. He was very passionate about providing exceptional service to each and every school; that dedication led to him also receiving award recognition in national buying groups that his company was a part of. Larry was a humble and proud man, with a fierce devotion to his family and his career.

Larry is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Lori (Wesley) Quon of Salina and Brother-in-law Wayne (Marcia) Anderson of Pullman, Washington as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bedford and Agnes Houdek, Brother Dennis and Sister-in-law Anita Houdek.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Kansas Wesleyan University Athletic Department or the First United Methodist Church of Salina. These donations will continue Larry’s legacy of supporting education and faith-based initiatives, causes that held great importance to him throughout his life.

Larry Dean Houdek’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

May his soul find eternal peace.

A ceremony to honor and celebrate Larrys life will be held on Wednesday, December 20th, 2023 at 1:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Salina, Ks. For more information or to leave condolences go to www.ryanmortuary.com
