Doris “Dode” Marie (Moore) Gallion was born on August 9, 1930 in Hunter, Kansas to Forrest and Beulah Beryl (Baird) Moore of Hunter, Kansas. She was their third child. She departed this life peacefully on Saturday, July 16 at Pinnacle Park in Salina, Kansas at the age of 91 years. Doris attended school in Hunter and graduated from Hunter High School in 1948. She began teaching in Ash Grove after graduation. She was a baptized in the Hunter United Methodist Church. She became a faithful and active member of the church throughout her life in Hunter. On March 2, 1952, Doris Moore married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Gale Edward Gallion. To this union, three children were born: Brenda Gayle, Kirk Dale, and JD. Sadly, Doris lost her beloved Gale on June 12, 1959.
Once her children were in school, Doris worked at the post office in Hunter while taking night classes and summer school from Marymount College in Salina. With grit and determination, Doris graduated from Marymount with a BS in elementary education in 1968. She began teaching in Lincoln, Kansas the following school year. In 1978, she continued her career by accepting a 2nd grade teaching position at USD 299 at Sylvan Unified. She later would teach Language Arts for the school district. “Mrs. Gallion” taught hundreds of children throughout her and held a warm spot for each one. She thoroughly loved teaching the children. She retired from public education in 1993. However, the lessons she taught continue to this day. Doris was a member of the Hunter United Methodist Church, the Hunter Ladies Auxiliary and the Bluebirds. She was a 4-H cooking leader. Dode was a dancer! She spent many nights driving “the ladies” to area singles’ dances. She loved movies, especially the ones with Elvis Presley. Viva Las Vegas being her favorite! But her pride and joys were her children and grandchildren! What a supporter she has been through the years!
Dode was well known for a lot of things, many of which have to do with food! Her tasty pies and cookies (notably her coconut cream pie which became a staple at the Legion Hall for the Hunter pheasant dinners), her delectable divinity, the seemingly endless supply of ice cream and Schwann’s treats in the freezer and of course… her popcorn balls! Kids (and parents alike) would make their way to Dode’s front door on Halloween (and sometimes Christmas)!
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Gale, her parents, Frosty and Beryl, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Inez Gallion, her brothers, Jerry Moore and Don Moore, sisters-in-law Eldora Seehafer and Wanda Moore, brother-in-law, Melvin Seehafer and granddaughter, Ginny Mae Frederking. She will be forever lovingly remembered by her daughter, Brenda (Alex) Andresen, Salina, Kansas; sons Kirk (Pam) Gallion, Mahaska, Kansas; and JD Gallion, Winifred, Kansas, grandchildren: Gayle (Andy) Williams, Salina, Candace (Jess) Zachgo, Tescott, Evan Frederking, Colwich, Kansas, Andrew (Natalia) Andresen, Waxahachie, Texas, Lindsay (CJ) Mettlen, Wilson, Kansas, Tahra (Jared) Zenger, Haddam, Kansas, Shelby (Colter) Brzon, Haddam, Kansas, Parker Gallion, Topeka, Kansas and Kinsley Gallion, Overland Park, Kansas, Great-grandchildren: Gleason Williams, Harper Williams, and Hampton Williams, Abrialle (Payton) Churchill, Graison Zachgo and Landyn Zachgo, Breanna (Dominic) Padilla, Addison Gale Frederking, Samantha Andresen and Emilia Andresen, Banks Mettlen, Jocelyn Zenger and Forrest Zenger, sister, Ivahmae Auld, many nieces and nephews, numerous relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hunter United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Union Cemetery in Hunter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be used in Doris’s name and may be sent in care of Ryan Mortuary.
