School districts near Army installations are getting a review of academic progress to ensure students of military families are getting their needs met.

The review was announced recently by Army Chief of Staff Raymond Odierno, who says the results will be used among other criteria in future decisions about where to station soldiers.

That review includes the Geary County school district that serves Fort Riley. The post is home to the Army’s 1st Infantry Division and nearly 18,000 soldiers and their families.

Ron Walker, superintendent of schools, said about 70 percent of the district’s more than 8,000 students are military dependents. The district operates six elementary schools and a middle school on Fort Riley.

Walker says he’s confident the Geary County district is on the right track.
