Jerald Russell “Jerry” Orchard

Jerald Russell Orchard, “Jerry” to friends and family, 81, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on January 29, 2026 in Salina, Kansas.  Jerry’s life was filled with love and humor, and he always had a smile.

He and his twin brother, Richard, were born December 19, 1944, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa to Claud and Laura (Kinnan) Orchard.  He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1964, then immediately enlisted in the Air Force.  Jerry served his country from 1964 to 1968 in the 865th Radar Squadron.  He was stationed at Luke Air Force Base, Nellis Air Force Base, and Naval Station Keflavik, Iceland.  After the service, he held several jobs including being a painter, making doughnuts, and caring for chickens in a hatchery, before being employed by Morton Buildings.

In 1970, Jerry married Lois Dieken, they met during a blind date at a friend’s party.  Nuptials were performed nine months later.  Jefferson, Iowa was their home until December 1972, when they moved to Salina, Kansas with their two children.  Jerry worked for Morton Buildings for 25 years before leaving and then drove a school bus for Durham School Services.

Jerry enjoyed spending his days watching old cowboy shows, M.A.S.H. and NCIS, along with playing digital games, hunting, and fishing.  His booming laughter would fill a room, telling jokes and stories with those close to him.

Jerald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard, Leon, and William; and sister, Connie.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Lois Orchard; children, Dawn Middleton and Kim Orchard; brother, Jackson; grandchildren, Heidi, Gage, Grace, David, Barrett; and a great granddaughter, Rowan.
