Lindsborg’s Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum will host “Flour Power,” an interactive presentation and demonstration.
According to the museum, the event featuring Gene Chávez will take place on April 25th at 1:30 p.m. at 120 E. Mill St. in Lindsborg.
Members of the community are invited to attend the free event.
The event is part of “Kansas Folklife: Celebrating Kansas Traditions,” a series of folklife presentations developed by Humanities Kansas recognizing the nation’s milestone 250th anniversary.
The Lindsborg Museum selected the presentation from the Humanities Kansas options available to be a “preview” event for Millfest the following Saturday on May 2 – the only time each year that guided tours are available while the machinery of the 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills is in motion. More information about Millfest is at www.oldmillmuseum.org/events/#Millfest.
In his presentation, Chávez shares his family’s recipe for making tortillas and tells stories about the history of Mexican residents settling in Kansas to work, raise families, and build community. Chávez draws upon his personal heritage and research to bring a simple, but important, cultural food tradition to life.
Chávez is a collector of Mexican American heritage in Kansas and consults on diversity issues as president of Chávez and Associates.
“Kansas Folklife: Celebrating Kansas Traditions” is part of “By the People: Beyond 250,” a national initiative of the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
