Topeka man sentenced in brother’s stabbing death

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years and two months in prison in the fatal stabbing of his brother.

Curtis Leon Small of Topeka was sentenced Friday in Shawnee County District Court for reckless involuntary manslaughter in the July 2012 death of his 41-year-old brother, Scottie Taylor. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that he told the judge that he’s trying to take “full responsibility” for his actions

In entering his plea in May, Small said his brother had attacked him. Small says he took a knife away from his brother and stabbed him. The defense argues that the stabbing was in self-defense and asked to let Small serve the sentence in the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. The judge said no.
