Teen killed, 2 others hurt in SW Kansas explosion

A home explosion in southwest Kansas has killed a 17-year-old boy and critically injured two others in the residence.

Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue says the explosion leveled the home at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Plymell, about 12 miles south of Garden City, and damaged a neighboring home.

KWCH-TV identifies the victims as Spencer Unruh, who was found dead by firefighters in the basement of the home; his 14-year-old brother, Riley Unruh; and their mother, Kelly Unruh.

Bascue says the blast could be heard as far as 10 miles away. Riley and Kelly Unruh were taken to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City before being flown to a hospital in Wichita.

The cause of the blast has not been determined.
