Teen Avoids Internet Scam

A Salina teen avoids being scammed on Craig’s List.

Police say that a 19-year-old male in Salina listed an X-Box video game system for sale on Craig’s List for $115. He was contacted by a person who agreed to buy it.

The buyer sent a check in the amount of $1,800, asked that it be cashed, and that the difference then be wired back to another address via Moneygram.

The teen did as instructed. He cashed the check at his bank, but was unsuccessful in an attempt to use Moneygram. He then was instructed to use Western Union instead.

The teen became suspicious, and contacted police. After confirming that this was a scam, and the check he was sent was counterfeit, he returned the cash back to his bank.
