Tax Scams Threaten Arrest

Tax season means scam season. Salina Police are urging citizens to beware of tax-related scams.

Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney says that typically the scam begins as a phone call, and “scare tactics” are used.

The caller claims to be from the IRS, or some other government agency, and claims that delinquent taxes are owed. To avoid going immediately to jail, money must be sent via Western Union or some similar service.

The IRS, or any other government agency, does not make contact via an unsolicited phone call.

Sweeney says that if you receive a call like this his best piece of advice is to not engage the caller, but rather to just hang up.
