Storm Dumps A Foot Of Snow On Area

Associated Press - February 5, 2014 6:39 am

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has ordered state offices in the Topeka area closed for a second consecutive day because of a winter storm.

The Legislature also canceled all of its meetings for Wednesday.

Schools throughout Kansas canceled classes and state government ground to a halt Tuesday as well. Residents dealt with a winter storm that brought heavy snow across the state.

Authorities blamed slick conditions for a two-car crash in southeast Kansas that killed two people.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner tells KSAL News that most significant crash in the Central Kansas area was a multi-vehicle pileup in Interstate 70 near the Riley / Wabaunsee County line. Multiple vehicles were involved, and the the road was closed as crews worked the scene.

Officials struggled to keep the I 135 / I 70 on ramp west of Salina open as trucks continued to become stuck.
Governor  Brownback said in a statement that the state faced significant challenges in keeping roads clear of blowing snow and that safety of state employees was a priority.
