Wyman overcomes odds to win Kansas kicker job

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Matthew Wyman may have overcome the longest odds to make the Kansas football team this season.
The redshirt freshman kicker never tried a field goal until his senior year in high school. He was cut by the Jayhawks during his first attempt at trying out last year. But he kept at it, and when he impressed coach Charlie Weis in another tryout, he had a spot on the team.
Then he started climbing the depth chart, and is firmly ensconced as the No. 1 kicker as the Jayhawks try to turn around a program fallen on hard times.
Wyman kicked a 45-yarder in a season-opening win over South Dakota, but missed a 47-yard try in a loss to Rice last Saturday night.
