Westover Takes Over Ell-Saline Cross Country Teams

Mike Hammett - September 1, 2014 6:28 pm

A new head coach takes over for the Ell-Saline cross country team this fall.

Jeff Westover takes over for Kevin Patrick. It’s Westover’s third year as a head coach after spending two years as a head coach in Nebraska.

The Cardinals return two varsity runners for both the boys and girls. Chase and Chance Finch are back for the boys, while Katie Adam and Morgan Parker are back to lead the girls.

Westover will turn to freshmen to help fill in both varsity squads. Jonah Mattson and Matt Wilvers will get a chance to help the boys, while Lyndsi Weems and Shyanne Dreyer will try and help the girls.

“Their work ethic so far has been tremendous,” Westover said. “A number of the athletes put in a great summer of training that will put them in a good position to be successful this season. I’ve also been very encouraged by their positive attitude and how supportive they have been of each other. These qualities will give a great foundation to work as the season goes along.”

While the team will be young, Westover believes his returners can help guide the newcomers.

“Obviously we have a number of freshmen that will be contributors and thrown into varsity races from the beginning,” Westover said. “Fortunately, we have a good core of returning runners. A few of these athletes ran at the state meet last season, so we are going to rely on the experience of our returning runners to help these newcomers learn the ropes.”

Westover said conditioning will be a key focus early on.

“With as many newcomers as we have, our goal first and foremost is to compete at a varsity level each week,” Westover said. “Many of these athletes haven’t ever put in the mileage that they will this coming season so this experience is going to be new for many of them. As long as we take care of what we can control each day, every one of the athletes on this team will experience success.”

Ell-Saline opens the season on Thursday at Tescott.
