With playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Kansas City starter Jason Vargas made sure the Royals didn’t lose any ground in the American League wild card race.
Vargas combined with four relievers to limit the Toronto Blue Jays to two hits in the Royals’ 1-o edging to close the three-game series.
Vargy picked up his 17th victory as he tossed six-and-a-third innings. He gave up Toronto’s only two hits of the night while fanning seven Blue Jays. Peter Moylan and Ryan Buchter closed out the seventh on six pitches.
Joakim Soria had a clean eighth with a pair of strikeouts while Mike Minor picked up the save on just six pitches.
Kansas City’s offense wasn’t on fire by any means, but Melky’s Cabrera RBI-single in the third gave KC the win. Toronto starter J.A. Happ gave up seven hits, a run and struck out six.
The Royals remain 3 1/2 games out of the second wild card spot. KC opens a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
