Tuesday Football Preview: Playoffs Begin

Mike Hammett - November 5, 2013 10:47 am

It’s the first round of the high school football playoffs, as winners tonight will advance on to play Saturday and the losers will have their seasons come to an end.

Phillipsburg Panthers (8-1) at Sacred Heart Knights (8-1), 5:50pm pregame, 6:00pm kickoff, Classic Hits 104.9

Play-by-play: Clarke Sanders. Analyst: Pat Martin.

The Sacred Heart Knights are in the playoffs for the fourth straight year after last week’s win over Lyons. Last year, Sacred Heart advanced to the second round before being dispatched by eventual state champion ScottCity.

Tonight, the Knights face a stern test in the Phillipsburg Panthers. Phillipsburg and Sacred Heart share a loss in common, as both lost to Beloit. The Panthers have some impressive victories to their name, rallying to beat Norton to make the playoffs on Thursday, and also getting wins over 2-1A qualifiers SmithCenter and Oakley.

The Panthers missed the playoffs last year, and are looking to advance on. The Knights want to keep the careers of 19 seniors going. The winner of tonight’s game will face the winner of ScottCity and Lakin. If Sacred Heart wins, they will play on the road on Saturday.

Southeast of Saline Trojans (7-2) at Beloit Trojans (9-0), 7:00 kickoff

The Southeast of Saline Trojans missed some key opportunities in their week six loss at Beloit. Southeast had opportunities to score at key times, but couldn’t convert in a 42-0 loss to top-ranked Beloit.

Tonight, Southeast comes in with some momentum, posting a 49-0 win over Lyons and a 42-0 win over Ellsworth coming in. The offense has been hitting on all cylinders, and the defense has played two very strong games entering the playoffs.

Beloit continues to roll along, posting 46-7 and 68-13 wins over Norton and Minneapolis over the last two weeks, respectively.
