South Swept in Season Finale

KSAL Staff - February 28, 2014 11:52 pm

In the final night of the regular season, Salina South concluded it’s year on the road in Derby and came home winless against the rival Panthers.

In the girls game the Cougars led early, but faltered late falling to Derby 44-37. South led 11-9 after the first quarter, and neither team led by more than two possessions in the first half until the 5:38 mark of the second quarter where the Cougars held their largest lead of the night at 16-9. South would be outscored 5-2 over the latter part of the half but still led at intermission 18-14.

The second half would start to see the lead slip away from the Cougars. With 3:10 left to go in the third quarter they led 22-21, but would relinquish the lead moments later and never see the lead again. Derby led 25-24 after three quarters in which they went on a 11-4 run to take the lead. South however would battle back, tying the game at 37 all with just over a minute left to go. A deep three by Haley Mills with 1:05 left however took the wind out of the sails for Salina South as they dropped the season finale 44-37.

The Cougars had career nights from both Bre Hogan and Jordyn Kirby as they scored 12 and 8 points respectfully. Madison Greenwood and Grace Mitchell of Derby had 17 points each. South ends the regular season at 4-16 with Derby finishing at 7-13.

In the boys game Salina South would trail early, fight back late, but could not climb the hill in their 60-49 loss.

Turnovers out of the gate put the Cougars behind the eight ball early, as they trailed 18-8 after the first quarter. They would get no closer than 10 points in the first half trailing 30-20 at intermission.

South began chipping away at the Derby lead in the second half however. Trailing by as many as 14, the Cougars closed the final 4:06 of the third quarter on a 11-4 run to trail by seven at the end of the quarter 40-33. South would get as close as two points trailing 49-47 with 2:25 left in the game, but could not get over the hump with Derby outscoring them down the stretch 11-2 and winning by a final of 60-49.

Justin Stonebreaker led Salina South with 17 points, all coming in the second half. Four Derby players broke double figures with Jeremy Dunham leading the way with 15 points. The Cougars end the year at 8-12 overall, while Derby finishes at 15-5 and winning the AVCTL with an 11-1 league record.

Both South teams will be on the road in their respective sub-states which begin next week.
