South Splits With Hutch as Boys Rally for Win

Salina South and Hutchinson split a pair of AVCTL Division I games on Friday at Salina South, with the Salthawks winning the girls game 36-28, and South taking the boys game 63-58.


In the early portion of the game, the teams traded leads until Hutch took over. The Salthawks got a three from Braydon Wells and a three-point play from Radley Arnold to take an 11-6 lead with 3:16 to go in the first. South would trail 13-9 after one.

In the second quarter, Hutch would push the lead to as much as 13 at 29-16 and 31-18 before the Cougars closed the half strong. South scored 10 of the final 13 points, including three three-pointers from Justin Stonebraker, hitting one at the buzzer. Hutch led 34-28 at the break.

Stonebraker’s three was the boost South needed. The Cougars kept chipping away in the third quarter, getting within three twice before finally breaking down the barrier on a free throw by Ryan Fox with :53 seconds to go in the quarter. South trailed Hutch 46-44 after three.

In the fourth, South tied the game at 46 on free throws by Stonebraker. After a Hutch bucket and a South free throw, the Cougars took their first lead since early in the first quarter on a basket by Zach Nachbar. The lead would change hands six more times before South went ahead for good on a basket by Shawn Smith wtih 1:41 remaining. Aaron Mar added a runner in the lane to make it a three point lead with 55 seconds left.

Hutch would add a bucket from Jezel Parra to trail by one, 59-58 with 41 seconds left, but South would seal the game at the line. Nachbar would hit two free throws to push the lead to three. Following a block by Mar, Stonebraker hit two more charities to secure the 63-58 win.

South was led by Stonebraker’s 19 points, while Nachbar added a career high 14. Braydon Wells had 17 points for Hutch.

South is 4-5 overall and 2-4 in AVCTL Division I, while Hutch drops to 3-6 and 2-4 in the league.

South hosts Sacred Heart on Tuesday in the first round of the SIT.


In the first quarter of the girls game, Hutch hit a pair of three-pointers from Shayla DeGarmo and Jenna Higgins to help push out to a 7-4 lead.

The Salthawks expanded the lead in the second quarter on another three by DeGarmo and basket by Logan Riggs to lead 12-4 with 5:14 to go in the half.

South closed the half strong, scoring eight of the final 10 points, including threes from Bre Hogan and Olivia Giroux to trail 14-12 at halftime.

In the third quarter, South would take the lead on a three by Emilee Holloway with 6:01 left, going up 17-16. South would lead for the remainder of the quarter, going up six at the end of the quarter on a basket by Taylor Thompson.

In the fourth quarter, both teams spent plenty of time at the free throw line. Hutchinson was just two-for-14 at the line in the first three quarters, but went 13-for-17 as a team in the fourth quarter. Hutch outscored the Cougars 17-3 in the final quarter, taking the lead for good on a three by Higgins and pulled away at the line for the 36-28 win.

South was led in scoring by Emilee Holloway’s eight points. Hutch was paced by DeGarmo’s 14 points.

South drops to 1-8 overall, 1-5 in AVCTL Division I. Hutch is 5-4, 3-3 in the league.

South hosts Concordia on Monday in the first round of the Salina Invitational Tournament.
