South Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Hays

KSAL Staff - February 22, 2014 8:01 pm

In a makeup game from last month, Salina South hit the road to Hays in a non league contest and came home winning one of two.

In the girls game the Cougars built an early lead and didn’t look back, defeating the Indians 45-28.

Hays would strike first in the game leading early, but after that it was all Salina South. Tied at five with 4:15 left to go in the first quarter Hays would not score again and South would score seven unanswered to lead 12-5 after one quarter. Both teams played back and forth in the second quarter and the Cougars held the lead at halftime 26-14.

The Indians would not get within single digits the rest of the game. In a low scoring third quarter Hays outscored South 7-5 but the Cougars still led 31-21 after three. South would double up the Indians in the fourth quarter outscoring them 14-7 and got a big win by the final of 45-28.

Emilee Holloway led all scorers with 13 points. Matti Schlaefli led Hays with 9 points. South is now 4-14 overall while Hays remains winless at 0-18.

In the boys game Hays would build an early lead and never look back as they continued their undefeated season with a 68-42 win over South.

South trailed early 9-3 and would be as close as five points at 12-7 with 2:06 left in the first quarter before Hays began to pull away. The Indians led after one quarter 19-10. The Indians built a double digit lead in the second quarter with a fast paced offense and a relentless defense outscoring South 14-5 in the second quarter and leading at halftime 33-15.

The Cougars would trail by as many as 18 in the third quarter and got as close as 12 points in the fourth but could not get over the hump with Hays picking up the 68-42 win.

Aaron Mar led all Cougar scorers with 12 points. Brady Werth netted a double double for Hays with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Indians stay undefeated at 18-0 overall with Salina South dropping to 7-11 on the year.

Salina South will be on the road on Tuesday when they get back into league action against Haysville Campus.
