South Soccer Draws with Maize

The Salina South boys soccer team picked up a 3-3 tie against Maize on Tuesday night at Salina Stadium.

Maize controlled the match early. The Eagles’ Colton Slusser scored in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead.

South managed to tie the match near halftime when Jose Escobedo scored on an assist from Erick Hernandez.

Maize went back in front in the second half. In the 47th minute, Alan Sanchez scored for a 2-1 lead. Sanchez then assisted Caleb Wilcox on a goal in the 53rd minute as the Eagles claimed a 3-1 lead.

South battled back. Robert Zatarain scored off a corner kick by Anthony Lopez in the 60th minute to bring the Cougars within one at 3-2.

The Cougars then tied the game in the 64th minute, when Victor Escalante scored on an assist from Zatarain.

Neither team was able to score during the rest of regulation or during the two overtimes.

The Cougars are 5-0-1 on the season, and 0-0-1 in AVCTL Division I. Salina South visits McPherson on Thursday.
