Mike Hammett - November 1, 2013 8:12 am

For the first time in program history, the Salina South boys soccer team has won a regional championship.

The Cougars knocked off Hays 4-2 on Thursday at Salina Stadium to advance to next week’s state quarterfinals.

The match didn’t start well for South. Hays scored just 10 seconds in on a goal by Jordan Windholz.

South tied the match in the 13th minute as Gonzalo Avila-Castro scored off an assist by Jose Escobedo.

South took a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute on Escobedo’s goal. Jose Ponce picked up the assist.

Robert Zatarain added a goal in the 64th minute off an assist from Escobedo to push the lead to 3-1.

Hays pushed back into the match in the 74th minute on a goal by Windholz. But South answered in the 75th minute as Victor Escalante scored off an assist from Avila-Castro.

The Cougars are 13-4-1 on the season and will play in Wichita on Tuesday in the quarterfinals against either Bishop Carroll or Kapaun Mt. Carmel.
