Smith Center Wears Down Ell-Saline

The Smith Center Redmen wore down the Ell-Saline Cardinals, pulling away for a 43-8 win.
The Redmen scored twice in the first quarter for a quick 14-0 lead on Ell-Saline.
However, the Cardinals wouldn’t back down. The Ell-Saline defense held SmithCenter scoreless for the rest of the half. Meanwhile, the Cardinals put together a 10-play drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by Justin Schmutz, pulling Ell-Saline within six, 14-8 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Smith Center rebuilt the lead to two touchdowns. Nick Lehmkuhl scored on a four-yard run with 5:54 to go in the quarter, pushing the Redmen lead to 22-8 after three quarters.
In the final frame, Smith Center pulled away. Clint Rogers scored on a three-yard touchdown run, then Rogers caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Kody Molzahn, and Lehmkul scored on a 29-yard run as the Redmen picked up the 43-8 win.
Ell-Saline was limited to 115 yards of total offense, with 111 on the ground. SmithCenter racked up 352 yards of offense, with 291 yards rushing.
Justin Schmutz was limited to 39 yards on 11 carries for Ell-Saline. Cody Walters had 48 yards on 12 carries.
SmithCenter improves to 4-2 and 2-0 in Class 2-1A district 6 with the win. Ell-Saline is 2-4 and 0-2 in district play with the loss.
Ell-Saline visits Republic County on Friday.
